The Watermelon Woman Capsule Collection brings together a selection of materials related to Cheryl Dunye’s landmark film, widely recognized as the first feature directed by a Black lesbian. Developed in collaboration with producer, feminist media artist, curator, and writer Alexandra Juhasz, the collection includes film festival ephemera, Dykes to Watch Out For cartoons, and related archival materials. All materials were ingested using the collaborative cataloging model developed by TFI’s Archives & Programs Manager, Allison Elliott, which centers shared authority and community knowledge in archival description.
