Tender Archive (2023-2024) is a series of ink paintings on mylar Alida Wilkinson created after reflecting on how the ubiquity of phone cameras often results in important moments getting lost in a sea of thumbnails. Scrolling through tens of thousands of photos on her phone, she selected images that evoked a potent memory and recreated them with gestural strokes of liquid ink, breathing new life into these forgotten moments. Using an anonymous submission portal, she opened this project to the public. As she painted photos people sent, their memories began to feel like her own. The resulting paintings based on cherished images from strangers and friends felt intrinsically linked to one another: an archive of collective memory.
This project was inaugurated at Pen + Brush Gallery in January 2024. Each work is titled with the date and time the original photo was taken.
